The mammography detectors market size is expected to grow from US$ 155.69 million in 2022 to US$ 234.65 million by 2030; it is estimated to record a CAGR of 5.3% during 2022-2030.
The growth of the mammography detectors market is attributed to the increasing incidences of breast cancer and rising awareness about the importance of early detection. However, the high cost of mammography hinders the market growth.
North America, followed by Europe, held the largest share of the mammography detectors market. The growth in Europe is attributed to the increasing incidence of breast cancer, prominent players in the market, and robust research and development activities. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women in Germany. As per Globocan 2020, about 69,697 new instances of breast cancer were reported in 2020 in Germany, representing 11.1% of all registered cancer cases. It caused 20,579 fatalities, and the five-year prevalence rate of breast cancer in all ages was 707.38 per 100,000 population. Breast cancer treatment costs almost US$ 2.13 billion (2 billion euros) annually. According to the German Cancer Society, one in eight women will have breast cancer during their lifetime. The Bundesamt f?r Strahlenschutz study on German mammography states that despite significant progress in breast cancer treatment, ~70,000 cases are diagnosed newly every year, while ~17,000 women succumb to death due to this disease.
As per the National Health Service (NHS), about one in seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifespan in Great Britain data. Each year, ~55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. In January 2023, the UK government pledged an additional US$ 12.31 million (?10 million) to fund 29 new NHS breast cancer screening units and nearly 70 life-saving upgrades to services in most needed areas. The investment helps deliver a more accessible NHS so patients can receive care close to their homes.
Numerous businesses run various programs to assist with breast cancer screenings, which can result in offering better treatment to the individual. For instance, in and around Paderborn, Germany, Radiologie am Theater has three special breast cancer diagnostic facilities. According to the center, more than 15,000 breast exams are performed annually in the country. In addition, women aged 50-69 in the country can have a free mammogram every two years. This helps detect breast cancer as early as possible to provide better treatment and increase the chances of recovery. These factors favor the region's market growth during the forecast period.
Detector Type -Based Insights
The mammography detectors market is segmented based on detector type into computed radiography detectors, flat panel detectors, CMOS flat detectors, and others. The flat panel detectors segment held the largest share of the market in 2022. However, the CMOS flat detectors segment is anticipated to register the highest CAGR during 2022-2030.
Computed radiography (CR) is a common method employed to produce digital radiographic images. CR is a digital imaging technology that uses a cassette-based system to capture and process X-ray images. It acts as an alternative to direct digital mammography and conventional analog film screen mammography. The CR system consists of a cassette that contains an imaging plate (phosphor plate); thus, an imaging plate is exposed to X-ray radiation instead of a film. The phosphor plate is made of a material that can store X-ray energy in the form of electrons when exposed. During a mammography examination, the breast is positioned on the cassette, and X-ray photons pass through the tissue before striking the phosphor plate. The cassette is then placed into a CR reader or scanner, which uses a laser beam to scan the phosphor plate, releasing the trapped electrons as light. The released light is detected by light-sensitive detectors in the CR reader. The detectors convert the light into electrical signals, which are processed and digitized by a computer. Further, the digital image is displayed on a computer monitor for evaluation with specialized software. Processing aims to improve image quality by reducing noise, removing artifacts, and improving contrast if necessary. Lastly, the processed digital image is used by radiologists to analyze and interpret the mammogram.
The CR system is often considered the most initially cost-friendly choice. Carestream offers a CR mammography solution with the DIRECTVIEW Classic CR System and DirectView software, along with a choice of a printing option. The Classic CR's mammography-dedicated image plates and cassettes are compatible with existing mammography modalities. Due to the mixed-use capabilities of digital mammography and general radiography, this CR system can be used in various applications. Moreover, their rigid nature makes them more reliable and durable, and less prone to wear and tear. In addition, using the Classic CR system gives a more accurate diagnosis within a short period.
CR is much more cost-effective as it allows for the transition from analog film-screen mammography to digital imaging without necessitating the complete replacement of existing equipment. It enhances the complete quality of image output, leading to greater operational efficiencies and consistently high-quality images. Overall, the use of CR detectors in mammography offers improved efficiency, flexibility, and accessibility and provides more accurate and timely breast cancer detection and diagnosis.
