According to the new research report on "Satellite Optical Ground Station Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis," published by The Insight Partners, the market is expected to reach US$ 113,299.14 million by 2028 and register a CAGR of 8.4% from 2023 to 2028.
The number of satellite launches is increasing globally because of the rising need for satellites in various applications such as earth observation, communication and navigation, and scientific research, which is fueling the growth of satellite optical ground station market. According to several space agencies, on average, ~466 SmallSats were launched per year during 2012–2021, and it is expected to increase to 1,846 SmallSats launches per year during 2022–2031. For the launch of these 4,663 SmallSats during 2012–2021, the government of various countries and companies invested ~US$ 23.1 billion, and it is expected that they will be further investing US$ 84 billion during 2022–2031. In addition, the number of space rocket launches, primarily for deploying satellites in space, is also rising rapidly. In 2021, there were 136 successful rocket launches, whereas in 2022, the number rose to 180. In September 2022, it was seen that 16 orbital launches took place, of which 8 took place in China, 6 in the Americas, and Europe and Russia conducted one each. Furthermore, Falcon 9 launched 191 Starlink broadband satellites, and SpaceX launched 1,465 Starlink satellites in 2022. Again, in January 2023, China launched 14 satellites atop a Long March-2D carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi Province. The 14 satellites included Qilu-2 and Qilu-3, Luojia-3 01, and Jilin-1 Gaofen 03D34. In February 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the successful deployment of three satellites into their intended orbits via SSLV-D2 vehicle.
As the number of satellite launches has increased, the need for optical ground stations also rose as they are used for commissioning and routine checkout of the satellite and transmitting and receiving the data simultaneously, which further boost the satellite optical ground station market growth. Moreover, optical ground stations provide real-time communications at much higher data rates, up to several Gbps, compared to RF, which can be used for various applications such as broadband, navigation, and research, fueling the growth of satellite optical ground station market. In addition, the optical ground station also helps survey space debris in different orbits around the Earth. Also, it is used to conduct surveys and follow-up observations of near-Earth objects, which can help protect the satellites in space and understand the accurate time and place to launch the satellite. Because of all the above uses of optical ground stations, various space centers are integrating new and advanced ground stations. For instance, in October 2022, DLR, the national aeronautics and space research center of the Federal Republic of Germany, inaugurated a new optical ground station at DLR's site in Oberpfaffenhofen. The new ground station will provide quantum secure communication and data rates in the terabit range and help improve the security of high-precision satellite navigation systems. Thus, the growing number of satellite launches is raising the need for more advanced and accurate optical ground stations, driving the satellite optical ground station market.
The global satellite optical ground station market share is segmented into operation, equipment, application, end user, and geography. In terms of operation, the satellite optical ground station market is bifurcated into laser satcom and optical operations. Going by equipment, the satellite optical ground station market is categorized into consumer equipment and network equipment. Based on application, the satellite optical ground station market is classified into laser operations, debris identification, earth observation, and space situational awareness. By end user, the satellite optical ground station market is divided into government & military and commercial enterprises.
Key Findings of Study:
North America held the largest satellite optical ground station market share in 2022, followed by Europe and APAC. Further, Europe is expected to register the highest CAGR in the market from 2023 to 2028. The rise in satellite launches and the development of satellites are considered the major driving factors for adopting satellite optical ground stations in North America. In January 2023, Starlink expanded more than 20 ground station sites in the US, and Starlink also proposed to apply for 99 unique gateway sites across the US territories. In October 2022, Leaf Space—a leading provider of ground segment as-a-service (GSaaS) solutions—announced to add five ground stations in the company’s Leaf Line network. In October 2021, Globalstar (a US-based company) installed a satellite ground station in Castilla-La Mancha; the ground station is developed for telecommunication and used to retransmit several television, voice and data services via satellites. Thus, such innovative projects are boosting the satellite optical ground station market growth.
